KITCHENER-WATERLOO CHESS CLUB

Club News

For the casual player, KW Chess Club offers a fun and relaxed playing environment. You can play non-rated games in our 'Coffee House Chess tourneys', or just have a fun game with another member. The club also organizes in-club tournaments year round that are CFC rated. A Tuesday evening tournament schedule is maintained by the club, usually alternating between 90 minute sudden death and 30 minute (Active) sudden death time controls. These tournaments are nationally rated, typically 5 rounds in length, and organized with the SWISS pairing system. A summer round-robin is also played with a slightly relaxed time frame to accommodate the holidays.

KW Winter Open

Date: February 15, 16, 17, 2008
Place: Kitchener City Hall, 200 King St. W., Kitchener, ON
Type: Regular Swiss tournament by sections (every player plays every round)
Rounds: 5:
- Friday; at 7:00 pm
- Saturday/Sunday at 9:30 am and 3:30 pm
Time Control: Note when two time controls are given, the first control requires a digital clock, the second an analog clock.
- Friday:
  - Open Section and U2000; Game in 90 min + 30 sec. added per move
  - U1700; Game in 90 min + 30 sec. added per move - or 30 moves/60 min then sudden death in 60 min
  - U1400 Sudden death/60 min
- Sat. and Sun
  - Open Section and U2000; Game in 110 min + 30.sec. added per move
  - U1700; Game in 110 min + 30 sec. added per move - or 30 moves/90 min then sudden death in 60 min
  - U1400; Game in 60 min + 30 added per move - or Sudden death/90 min
Entry Fee:
- $50 per player
- less $10 for juniors and seniors (under 18 / over 65 a)
- $10 late fee after February 13
Sections: Open, U2000, U1700, U1400 and unrated
Prizes: $$Based on Entries, U1700 and U 1400 sections prizes will include trophies , chess equipment & book prizes.

KW Oktoberfest Open

Final Standings

"FM Michael Dougherty showed that he still has what it takes approaching the age of 50 with an excellent tournament beating GM Sambuev in round 4! In a smoothly engineered performance he held IM Samsonkin to a draw in round 5 to tie for first with the young IM. Michael has won several firsts in Kitchener tournaments over the years and claims Kitchener City Hall has a special ambience for him. Local high school star Jeff Willms also tied for 1st with a nice queen sacrifice win as Black against Alex Martchenko in the last round. This should push his rating well over 2100 and he will be approaching master class for the first time. This finish left visiting GM Sambuev in 4th place and without a prize! (how often do you see a GM not winning a prize in a provincial tournament??) Mahmud Hassain cruised to 1st place in the under 2000. 10 yr old Steven Liu had a plus score against 1800's as he continues to improve. Timothy Waite and Derrick Rabethge tied for 1st in the under 1700 and Patrick Yu finished first in the under 1400 field."
